Description

On his upcoming trip to London

Well-regarded French artist (1832–1883) best known for his evocative illustrations of Biblical and literary subjects. His illustrated bible was among the best-selling books of the nineteenth century, its cultural saturation so thorough that it earned a mention in Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. ALS in French signed “G Doré,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, 1876. Doré writes to an unnamed gentleman mentioning that he has just returned from the country , thanking the recipient for a “pleasant souvenir,” and discussing his upcoming journey to London. Doré’s trip was most likely related to the book London by Louis Ernaut, published in the same year, which included 174 engravings by the artist. In good condition, with folds and wrinkles, scattered soiling and wrinkling, a few small holes and edge tears to blank portions (early tape repairs), and mounting remnants to reverse of final page, the writing nonetheless remaining dark and mostly unaffected. R&R COA.
