Business check, drawn on the Jay Cooke & Co. Banker’s account, 7.25 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Grant, payable to W. B. Moses for $364.00, January 23, 1866. Cooke's firm had been the government's chief financier of the Union military effort during the Civil War. The firm then became a federal agent in the government financing of railroad construction. So when the firm, heavily invested in railroad construction, closed its doors on September 18, 1873, a major economic panic swept the nation. Usual cancellation cuts, revenue stamp to top left corner, small tape repair and mounting remnants to reverse and several bank stamps, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
