Signed book: De Re Metallica: Translated from the First Latin Edition of 1556. First edition. London: Mining Magazine, 1912. Vellum-covered boards with slipcase, 9 x 13.75, 640 pages. Signed and inscribed on the front free end page, “To Mr. & Mrs. Leo Lowell with the kind regards of Herbert Hoover.” Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, had extensive scientific backgrounds, and their joint translation of this groundbreaking treatise on metallurgy by Georgius Agricola (1494–1555) remains one of the classics of the field.
