Autograph album originally owned by Mrs. S. M. Wright of Charles City, Iowa, 7.5 x 5, circa 1870s. Nearly all of the signatures are in ink, and are single-sided (a few examples double-sided or with multiple signatures on the same page); a few are also on loose or affixed slips. Among the more prominent signers: R[utherford] B. Hayes, Confederate general J. B. Gordon, A[mbrose] E. Burnside, H[annibal] Hamlin, Confederate general M[atthew] C. Butler, James G. Blaine, Black senator B[lanche] K. Bruce, Civil War army captain John J. Patterson, Roscoe Conkling, J[ames] A. Garfield, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, Benj[amin] F. Butler, Union general N[athaniel] P. Banks, and temperance activist Francis Murphy (AQS: “With malice toward none, with charity for all”). In very good condition overall, with covers worn and detached, rippling and toning to pages, and scattered light staining, mostly to edge of pages and not affecting writing.
