Description

McKean introduces “a young Gentleman of the Law ... who .. wishes to obtain some knowledge of foreign countries, especially of London and Paris”

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware, Revolutionary War officer, delegate to the Continental Congress, and Governor of Pennsylvania (1734–1817). LS signed “Tho. M:Kean,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, May 20, 1809. McKean writes to John Armstrong [Jr.; 1758–1843], then serving as Minister to France, later to become Secretary of War under James Madison. In part: “Sir, If the Count de Taube, Envoy Extraordinary &c of His Majesty the King of Wurtenberg, shall be still at Paris, be pleased to inform him, that the estate of Doctor John David Frank of Middletown in Pennsylvania, deceased, has been managed by a Mr. Peter Ulrich…. I have conversed on the subject, and that, from the fair character of Mr. Ulrich, I have reasons to hope, this affair has before this time been settled between him and his constituents to their mutual satisfaction, as he sailed for Wurtenberg early in the last year. Permit me to embrace this opportunity of introducing to your acquaintance George Emlin Jr. Esq. a young Gentleman of the Law, and a native of this city, whose father, an eminent Merchant here, wishes to obtain some knowledge of foreign countries, especially of London and Paris. Any civilities you may be so kind to show him will oblige a young Gentleman of merit, and claim my thanks.” In very good condition, with faint folds, a touch of toning and soiling, and a few chips and small losses to blank margins, most neatly restored. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
