Description

Hoover correspondence archive, including a 1971 letter attacking a prominent journalist who was on Nixon’s notorious “Enemies” list: “I do not waste time answering the lies written by Jack Anderson”

Lot of twenty-two TLS, each on FBI letterhead, 1958–1971, mainly sending thanks and good wishes, with a few letters commenting on FBI business. In one, Hoover sends an incentive award of $150.00 to an agent who had done outstanding work “in the investigation of the Theft from interstate Shipment case involving Lawrence Ellenson and others and of eight related cases”; in another, to journalist Bruce Frassinelli, he vociferously blasts the “lies written by [journalist] Jack Anderson,” and notes that “despite what Anderson has written concerning my alleged criticism of the Agent in New York who acted with such decisiveness in the attempted hijacking of an airliner, no disciplinary action was taken.” Also included is a vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Joseph Broom with all good wishes, J. Edgar Hoover, 2.23.43.” Accompanied by several unsigned photos, FBI Christmas cards, and secretarial correspondence. In fine condition, with usual mailing folds to letters, a few bends and wrinkles, and mild soiling to photo. R&R COA. Featured collection item.
