Description

A battered Bloch remains hopeful: “Returned ... only two weeks ago with a new, promising lease of semi-life”

Swiss-born American composer (1880–1959) best known for his large-scale, often Jewish-inflected chamber, orchestral, and choral works. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, November 19, 1956. Bloch writes to Miss [Sylvia] Rosenberg, a secretary at ASCAP. In part: “Instead of a trip to my native country, I had first to cope with a fractured vertebra, last May, then, on Sept. 5, to be carried by ambulance to a Portland hospital, with one or two—or more!—heart attacks … Returned to A[gate] Beach only two weeks ago, with a new, promising lease of semi-life, still under doctor’s supervision … I was quite ready for a short CODA … but, apparently it has been postponed and … the critics may agree with me—for once—that it is too long.” Usual mailing folds, irregular trimming to edges (not affecting writing), and marginal chip, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
