Scalloped-top vellum DS, signed by Jefferson as president, “Th: Jefferson,” and Madison as Secretary of State, one page, 10.25 x 15, July 14, 1806. Ship’s pass issued to “the Brig Fair America of Preston…Strange Master and Commander of the Burthen One Hundred sixty seven tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with eight men to pass with her Company Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hinderence, seizure or molestation.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Jefferson, “Th: Jefferson,” and countersigned by his Secretary of State James Madison. In fine condition, with moderate storage folds, one through a single letter of Madison’s signature, a repairable separation and small area of paper loss along a vertical fold at top of document, Madison’s signature a few shades light, but totally legible, intact paper seal and a light shade of overall mild toning.
