Description

Twice signed Sarony cabinet photo, presented as a birthday gift from Sherman

Vintage sepia 4.25 x 6.5 red-bordered Sarony three-quarter cabinet photo of Sherman seated in full dress uniform, signed in the lower border in black ink, “W. T. Sherman, General 1888.” Notation at bottom reads, “Taken on 68 birthday.” Photo is also signed and inscribed again on the reverse, “To General H. L. Abbot, Engineers, with compliments of W. T. Sherman, General, New York, April 26, 1888.” Henry Larcom Abbot was a military engineer who graduated from West Point in 1854 and served in the United States Army until 1895. During the 1850s, Lt. Henry L. Abbot and Capt. A. A. Humphreys conducted a thorough scientific survey of Mississippi River flow from the river’s junction with the Ohio southward to its emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. In fine condition, with some mild toning and discoloration to reverse from photo adhesion, with signature and inscription still perfectly legible, a slight ripple to top edge and a few trivial surface marks. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
