Description

Six days before his death, Coolidge ironically writes: “I doubt very much if it will ever be possible for me to see very far into the future.”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, December 30, 1932. Letter written just six days before his death. In part: “You are too far down the line in suggesting a subject to me and I doubt very much if it will ever be possible for me to see very far into the future. I am so tied up on this railroad work that it is hard to think of anything else. Perhaps you can come in when we begin to work on the Committee again.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing, a vertical fold through a letter of the signature, chips to upper left corner. On January 5, 1933, Coolidge left his law office before noon and was driven to his home in Northampton, Massachusetts. He fetched a glass of water from the kitchen, exchanged a few words with a hired man working in the cellar, and then went upstairs to was for lunch. When his wife later returned from her shopping trip she found Coolidge dead in their upstairs bedroom, the victim of a sudden, massive heart attack. R&R COA.
