The “Titan of Bronze” pens a military appointment just weeks before he is fatally shot while fighting for Cuban independence

Distinguished general (1848–1896) who was second-in-command of the Cuban army during the War of Independence against Spain and who had earlier earned renown as one of the outstanding guerrilla leaders in Latin America. ADS in Spanish, signed “Lieutenant General A. Maceo,” one page, 6.25 x 8.5, October 19, 1896. Maceo makes a military appointment. In part (translated): “The main fort has assigned a corporal grade to the soldier Miguel Cavia for his services to the cause of independence. For the purposes of credentials, this was expedited at Patria and Liber.” Maceo was fatally shot in combat on December 7, 1896, just six weeks later.
