Writing from the White House, Ike offers stirring words of praise: “Your concern and your action as a private citizen surely reflect the spirit of initiative, and the sense of firm conviction, that are essential to our democratic life itself”

TLS as president signed “D.E.,” one page, 7 x 10.25, White House letterhead, October 29, 1957. Ike writes to Sigurd S. Larmon, president of the powerhouse advertising firm Young & Rubicam. in part: “Mr. Harold Boeschenstein has told me of your generous dedication of time and effort, during the past summer, to support a program that, as you know, I deeply believe to be vital to our national interest. Your concern and your action as a private citizen surely reflect the spirit of initiative, and the sense of firm conviction, that are essential to our democratic life itself. I am grateful to you. We were not able to achieve at once all that I believe essential but your thoughtful efforts helped to preserve and to continue this important work, and I am confident that our combined and continued effort will bring even more constructive results in the future.” The program Ike refers to is apparently his administration’s “mutual security” program, for which he organized a citizens’ group to help work towards its passage.
