Description

Grant in the Big Apple

Ink signature and sentiment, “With the compliments of U. S. Grant, New York City,” on an off-white 6.5 x 4.5 slip affixed to a same-sized piece of heavier stock, dated January 29, 1881. In this year, Grant purchased a house in New York City and made a large investment in a banking partnership whose eventual failure led to Grant’s financial ruin. The situation was so dire that Grant was forced to write a now-classic memoir in order to raise desperately needed funds, a task he completed mere days before his death in 1885. In fine condition, with light folds, mild scattered toning and soiling, and a few tiny edge tears and chips, well away from writing. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
