Description

Large Lillie Langtry signature with unusual early color photo

Lot of two items: Bold ink signature, “Lillie Langtry,” on a cream-colored 3.5 x 2.5 card. The second item is a striking nineteenth-century color cabinet photograph, 4.26 x 6.5, the mount bearing the stamped caption “Mrs. Langtry,” a photographer’s New York address, and the patent date April 29, 1879. The photo is an eye-catching three-quarter length portrait of the elegantly dressed actress. The color is either the result of hand tinting (if so, much more extensive and skillful than is usually seen) or an early color process. Though color photography was by no means prevalent in this period, crude but workable color processes had been developed as early as the 1860s. In fine condition, with a subtle touch of bleeding to signature and edge wear and a few surface marks to photo. R&R COA.
