Description

Lonely lawmaker Daniel Webster seeks company in anticipation of a wifeless winter in Washington: “I am anxious to supply myself with the next best companions.”

American politician. A U.S. representative from New Hampshire (1813–1817) and later a representative (1823–1827) and senator (1827–1841 and 1845–1850) from Massachusetts, he was a noted orator who espoused preservation of the Union. He twice served as secretary of state (1841–1843 and 1850–1852). ALS signed “Dan’l Webster,” two pages, 8 x 9.75, October 11, 1826. Letter to Stephen Van Rensselaer. In part, “Mrs. Webster has made up her mind that I must go to Washington this ensuing winter alone. I am therefore anxious to supply myself when I get there with the next best companions & the most agreeable associations.” He then goes on suggesting that the two of them share accommodations in Washington. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, several small repairs, some show-through from writing on reverse and some light creasing. R&R COA.
