French statesman and military officer who became an intimate associate of George Washington and who advanced the American cause on both sides of the Atlantic. ALS in French, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 8 x 10, June 16, 1830. An untranslated letter written from Paris to “Mon cher marechal,” apparently relating the awarding of the rank of Honorary Lieutentant General to the Duc de Mahon. In the following month, July, Lafayette, who had been made chief of the National Guard, led a successful coup to dethrone the Bourbon dynasty so that France could continue on the path to constitutional democracy. The new king, Louis Philippe, ruled until he abdicated in 1848, ushering in the Second Republic. In fine condition, with usual mailing folds, ink stamp and secretarial notations, and partial filing holes at left edge, well away from any writing. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
