Wife of President Ulysses S. Grant and First Lady from 1869 to 1877. ALS signed “Aunt Julia Dent Grant,” one black-bordered page both sides [the second page in a different “side-by-side” format], 7 x 9, September 22, 1853. A letter to her niece May expressing concern for the health and well-being of Julia’s brother, Fred. In part: “I am deeply disturbed to hear of dear brother Fred’s illness, and more than shocked to learn he is off by himself with out his wife or any of his children near him. Surly [sic] I misunderstand you when you admit this, that your father is alone surly not if he is ill and in the condition you have intimated. This insinuation has been made before…. His & my whole family … concluded upon close observation that Genl. Dent’s mind was as sound as those who questioned it. I hope he is better before this generous, noble hearted soldier that he is. No one has a word to say of Genl. Dent but to praise him…. Do not let him be alone.” In fine condition, with usual mailing folds, light toning and soiling, and a few spots. R&R COA.
