LBJ praises the non-hippies who worked in the White House: “I strongly believed in the promise of this program ... even more firmly ... after I came to know the quality and character of the young people who applied for it”

TLS, one page, 7 x 9, personal letterhead, June 30, 1970. Johnson writes to a supporter regarding the White House Fellows program. In part: “I strongly believed in the promise of this program when it was inaugurated, and even more firmly so, after I came to know the quality of the young people who applied for it. I’m grateful you reaffirmed that sense of accomplishment and success.” Johnson inaugurated the highly competitive White House Fellows program in 1964, inviting successful applicants to spend a year working as aides to senior White House staff, the Vice President, and cabinet officials. In fine condition, with usual mailing fold. R&R COA.
