Description

Governor Reagan lashes out at the media over his mental health programs, “I’m aware you still aren’t convinced about what we’re trying to do in the area of Mental Health…our program is not being properly reported by the news media.”

ALS signed “Ron,” one lined yellow page, 8.5 x 12, December 18, 1967. Letter written to Jack regarding programs to help the mentally ill. In part, “I’m aware you still aren’t convinced about what we’re trying to do in the area of Mental Health. The visit to Camarillo was in response to an invitation by the statewide independent mental health group who were holding a board meeting there & asked me to attend. The tour of the hospital was incidental to the main purpose. I’ve given great consideration to the idea you suggested about a surprise visit but honestly have to believe it…would result in more ill will…Frankly Jack I’m not totally without experience in this area having grown up in a town where one of the nation’s largest hospitals was located…Recently it was announced in Wash[ington] that Cal[ifornia] leads the other 49 states in per patient spending & in the percentage of patients who are returned to normal life…our program is not being properly reported by the news media.” While Reagan was Governor he would sometimes write letters in long hand, then pass them off to his secretary to be typed, who would add the date and run a cancellation line through the letter. In fine condition, with light diagonal pencil line through text. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
