Handsome 4 x 6.5 Harroun & Bierstadt, N.Y. artotype carte-de-visite bust portrait by Harroun & Bierstadt, N.Y., signed “J.A. Garfield” in fountain pen beneath the image. In fine condition, with a couple of small light areas to the signature, crease to the lower right corner, trivial soiling in the borders. Artotypes (pictures produced in sensitized pigmented gelatin by exposure to light under a negative; and subsequent washing out of the soluble parts) were produced by the noted company Harroun and Bierstadt, NY. Edward Bierstadt (1824-1906) was the brother of noted painter/photographer Albert Bierstadt, and worked closely with him to reproduce his images through the artotype process.
