Description

Burr’s request for legal documents

After fighting in the war for American independence, Aaron Burr took up law and politics in New York. He was a candidate for the presidency in 1800, but lost to Thomas Jefferson when the election was decided by the House of Representatives. Burr served as Jefferson's vice president. In 1804, he challenged longtime political rival Alexander Hamilton to a duel and fatally shot him. After his term ended, he ventured west and tried to establish a new republic, and was indicted for treason in 1807. He was acquitted, traveled in Europe for a few years, then returned to New York to practice law. Burr's maternal grandfather was New England theologian Jonathan Edwards. Third person ALS, one page, 6.25 x 8, October 17, no year, from Burr to “The Honr’ble Judge Edwards,” reads, in part: “Mr. Burr presents…that Judge Edwards would have the goodness to send, by the bearer of this, the papers…Jackson & DeLancey.” The integral address leaf is in Burr’s hand, as well. In very good condition, with scattered creasing, folds, minor edge wear, trivial soiling to the upper right corner. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
