Beautiful and rare matched set of engraved portraits showing the President and First Lady in bust-length poses, each approximately 6 x 9. President Hayes’ portrait, likely by G. Burt, but not so identified, is signed “R.B. Hayes” and dated by him as President, “3 Dec. 1879” beneath the printed facsimile of his signature. Mrs. Hayes’ portrait, engraved by “G. Burt from a photo” is signed Lucy B. Hayes on the lower, wide margin. In very good condition, with scattered overall foxing, border toning from and a bit of adhesive residue to the reverse of each from a previous mounting. Signed engravings of the presidents and first ladies from this period are highly uncommon as photographs had virtually surpassed the medium in both popularity and desirability.
