ALS signed “JH,” one page, 6.5 x 12, June 3, 1782. Hancock, then Governor of Massachusetts, sends a plea to the “Gentlemen of the Senate & Gentlemen of the House of Representatives.” In full: “The Experience of many inconveniences the year past, constrain me to mention to you that the Room at present Allotted for the Transaction of Business by the Supreme Executive [i.e., himself] does not answer the purpose which the General Court intended. I therefore Submit to you Consideration the propriety of Taking such Steps as may Tend to the better Dispatch of the Publick Business, & the more convenient Accommodation of those who apply to the Executive.” Formerly part of the Hancock-Chase collection at the National Museum of American History. In very good condition, with toning mostly to edges, scattered discolorations, and folds with partial separations and chips affecting a few words (one separation with archival repair to reverse), none near Hancock’s initials.
