Vellum scalloped-top DS, signed by Monroe as president and by John Quincy Adams as secretary of state, one page, 10 x 14.5, February 12, 1818. Ship’s pass issued to “Brig Stephen of Newport, Jacob Smith Master and Commander of the Burthen Two Hundred forty nine 8/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with four carriage guns, navigated with fourteen men to pass with her Company Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance, seizure or molestation.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink “James Monroe,” and at the bottom “John Quincy Adams.” Nicely double matted and framed with engraved portraits of Monroe and Adams, both bearing facsimile signatures, and a small plaque, to an overall size of 32.5 x 22.5 In fine condition, with expected folds, a bit of mild toning and a worn but intact seal.
