ALS as president, one page, 8 x 11, December 29, 1829. President Jackson writes a private letter to his Secretary of the Treasury. In part, “Mr. Tyler waited upon me yesterday & made inquiry if Mr. Biddle had resigned his appointment in the Land Office of which I was not advised. The case of Mr. Wm. E Hayne of South Carolina I brought to your view the other day. I was informed that one of the appraisers of the Port of Charleston was under parole & ought to be removed…the appraiser is unworthy to be retained. The office would be well…by conferring it upon Mr. Hayne, who is presented to me as every way worthy…& himself the only son of Isaac Hayne who fell a sacrifice to British cruelty in the Revolutionary War.” Isaac Hayne was hanged by the British on August 4, 1781 as a warning to patriots, which wound up having the opposite effect. Jackson hand addressed the reverse of the envelope to his Secretary. Expected folds, some scattered light toning and wrinkling and some seal remnants, otherwise fine condition.
