President Cleveland echoes the sentiment of a nation as he consoles U. S. Grant’s widow on the same day as her husband’s passing

LS as president, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 9.5, Executive Mansion letterhead, July 23, 1885. President Cleveland writes to Julia Dent Grant on the day of her husband’s passing, expressing his sorrow and planning of the funeral arrangements. In full, “Obeying the dictates of my personal feelings and in accord with what I am sure is the universal sentiment of his fellow countrymen towards your late husband, I am solicitous that every tribute of respect and affection should be duly rendered, and with constant consideration of your personal wishes on the subject. Adjutant General Richard C. Drum is charged with the delivery of this note, and will receive and convey to me any intimation of the wishes of yourself and your children in respect to the selection of the place of burial, the conduct of the funeral, and the part which may be borne by those charged with the administration of the government.” In fine condition, with expected folds and light show through from text on reverse.
