Description

Lincoln endorsement signed less than two weeks before the first Civil War battle in his home state of Kentucky

Handwritten endorsement signed as President, “A. Lincoln,” on a 3.25 x 1.75 off-white slip clipped from a larger document. Lincoln writes: “All right, but now it must go through Gov. Curtin’s hands. Sept. 7, 1861.” Days later, on September 18, Confederate and Union forces who had occupied “neutral” Kentucky clashed for the first time at the Battle of Barbourville. Double cloth matted and framed with a small portrait of Lincoln, to an overall size of 9 x 12. In fine condition, with a light vertical fold and a small spot of toning to right edge. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
