Description

President and his future assassin

Hand addressed free franked envelope, 6.5 x 3.5, addressed in Garfield’s hand to “J. DeWitt Miller, Esq., Fort Edward, N. Y.,” and franked across the top, “J. A. Garfield, MC;” and a bold fountain pen signature “Charles Guiteau,” on a 3.75 x 1.5 off–white lined slip, affixed to a slightly larger slip. Lot is accompanied by a July 23, 1881, issue of Harper’s Weekly, honoring the then–wounded Garfield on the cover and a printed copy of Garfield’s speech given in the House of Representatives on January 23, 1872. Two vertical folds, light overall soiling and a couple brushs to Guiteau’s signature and a couple ink and pencil notations to envelope, otherwise very good to fine condition. R&R COA.
