Description

Eisenhower sneaks around his own rule against contributing quotes for publications, by providing a quotation for a general’s biography with the caveat: “I have no objection to your using the following, provided only that you do not list it as a statement submitted for the express purpose of the biography”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, November 2, 1949. In part: “I first met General McNaughton in 1942 when he called on me in Washington concerning the effective prosecution of the war. During the early part of my experiences in Europe, McNaughton was commanding the Canadian forces…I had the opportunity to discuss with him phases of the conflict. I felt then and I believe now that he was a man of discernment who was deeply devoted to the success of the Allies.” Accompanied by a pre-printed thank you card regarding good wishes received during an illness, signed in black ink by Eisenhower and a TLS expressing thanks from Mamie Doud Eisenhower. In fine condition, with an even shade of light overall toning and a horizontal mailing fold touching a few letters of the signature of the Eisenhower TLS. R&R COA.
