Description

George Steinbrenner writes to an angry fan: “You are one of those unique and special type fans who we need so badly. I’m afraid that we have treated you very shabbily.”

Longtime and controversial owner of the New York Yankees. Group of two TLSs, 8.5 x 11, on New York Yankees stationery, May 24 and 25, 1973. Steinbrenner responds to a fan who complains about a delay in opening Yankee Stadium on an inclement day. In full: “I received your letter, and I am greatly concerned with what you have to say, because you are one of those unique and special type fans who we need so badly. I’m afraid that we have treated you very shabbily. I’ve passed this letter on to Gabe Paul, who handles the stadium operations, and I’m sure that he will get into it immediately, and see that such a situation is corrected. You may be sure that I am very sorry about what you have said, and I hope that you will bear with us until we get the situation straightened out.” The second letter is a copy of an interoffice communication concerning the same matter, to which Steinbrenner adds and signs a short handwritten note: “Re: Your letter, I thought you should have a copy for your info.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with usual folds and light toning. R&R COA.
