Description

“Prof. Dr. W. Röntgen & Frau” check in to a Swiss hotel

German physicist who was awarded the first Nobel prize in 1901 for his discovery of x-rays. The discovery was made in 1895 when, by chance, he noticed that a phosphor screen near a vacuum tube through which he was passing an electric current fluoresced brightly, even when shielded by opaque cardboard. DS, one page, 6.5 x 3.5, March 12, 1897. A “Bulletin d'Arrivée” (arrival notification) for the Hotel Schweizerhof in Lucerne, filled out in pencil by Röntgen. He notes “53” as his room number, “Wurzburg” as his home town, and signs as “Prof. Dr. W. Röntgen & Frau.” Three vertical folds and some light wrinkling, otherwise condition is fine. An important scientific autograph! COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
