Longfellow asks a friend to the set the table for disappointing news, “If you will take the trouble to write a line to him, I shall be much obliged. It will make it easier for me afterwards.”

Poet known for The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Revere’s Ride, The Village Blacksmith, etc. ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, April 3, 1881. Longfellow writes to a friend concerning another gentleman’s story. In part, “I am sorry that Mr. Roger’s story does not command itself, as likely to succeed with the public. If you will take the trouble to write a line to him, I shall be much obliged. It will make it easier for me afterwards.” In fine condition, with tape reinforcement along spine of second integral page, photo of Longfellow’s bedroom affixed to integral second page, and some scattered light toning.
