Description

A week after refusing the 1888 Republican presidential nomination, McKinley responds to reassurance that he did the right thing: “I…beg to assure you that of the many letters I received commending my course in Chicago, none have given me greater satisfaction that [sic] yours”

TLS signed “Wm. McKinley, Jr.,” one page, 7.75 x 9.5, House of Representatives letterhead, July 2, 1888. Letter of thanks to a gentleman who attended a course in Chicago. In part, “I…beg to assure you that of the many letters I received commending my course in Chicago, none have given me greater satisfaction that [sic] yours.” In 1888 in the National Republican Convention in Chicago, McKinley was chairman of the committee on resolutions and was leader of the delegation from Ohio, which had been instructed for John Sherman; after James G. Blaine withdrew his name there was a movement, begun by Republican congressmen, to nominate McKinley, who received 16 votes on the seventh ballot, but passionately refused to be a candidate, considering that his acquiescence would be a breach of faith toward Sherman. In fine condition, with several mailing folds, one affecting first letter of last name. R&R COA.
