“Blackjack” Pershing skips the 1939 New York World’s Fair: “Best wishes for a most enjoyable day and evening at the Fair”

TLS signed “John J. Pershing,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, October 12, 1939. The esteemed General of the Armies declines an invitation to an event at the New York World’s Fair. In part: “Thank you very much for your kind invitation to be your guest at the luncheon and supper at the World’s Fair Day of the Military Order of the World War. I deeply appreciate your kindness and regret exceedingly that my health will not permit me this pleasure.” In fine condition, with usual mailing folds, one touching paraph beneath signature.
