Lincoln promotes John S. Poland, who served with distinction at Bull Run and became the namesake of Spanish-American War Camp Poland

DS as president, one page, 14.75 x 19.5, June 8, 1863. President Lincoln appoints John S. Poland to the rank of “Captain in the Second Regiment of the Infantry.” Nicely signed at the conclusion in black ink “Abraham Lincoln,” and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Poland had a notable military career, in particular he was recognized by Lt. Col. William Chapman after the battle of Bull Run, “First Lieutenant John S. Poland, regimental quartermaster, Second Infantry, my aide-de-camp, was with me during the whole day, carrying orders under the most galling fire to every part of the field where the brigade was engaged, and was conspicuous for his gallantry.” After the war Poland served in the Indian territories as commander of the Standing Rock Indian Agency. Poland was among the soldiers who had to deal with the aftermath of the Little Big Horn disaster. During the Spanish-American War, Camp John S. Poland was established and named for the then Brig. General commanding the Second Division of the First Army Corps who died at Chickamauga on August 7, 1898. In fine condition, with expected folds, worn but intact seal, a touch of scattered light toning and a small mark along bottom edge. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
