Description

MacArthur wants you!…only if you want him, “The adoption of the military career carries with it a certain distinction of caste and at the same time disobligations of comfort that should be carefully considered…I do not believe, however, if this is not his natural bent that he should be coerced in that direction.”

TLS, one page, 7 x 9, War Department letterhead, February 14, 1931. Excellent content, to a New Jersey doctor regarding a career in the military. In full, “The adoption of the military career carries with it a certain distinction of caste and at the same time disobligations of comfort that should be carefully considered. Those boys who have the adventurous spirit and who are prepared to endure the sacrifices incident to Army service usually make a brilliant success of the profession of arms. The financial reward is not great, but it is perhaps compensated for by the dignity of the profession. If a boy desires to enter the Military service, I believe he should be given that opportunity. I do not believe, however, if this is not his natural bent that he should be coerced in that direction.” In very good condition, with scattered light wrinkling and soiling, a horizontal fold, and a paperclip impression to upper left corner. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
