Description

Best known as Boss Tweed. He gained absolute power of Tammany Hall (1868), became the head of a group of politicians known as the Tweed Ring, which gained control of New York City finances and swindled the treasury of between 20 and 200 million dollars, before being exposed in 1870. DS, signed “W. M. Tweed,” one page, 8 x 10, City of New York letterhead, July 7, 1869. Payment voucher for $78.00 payable to M. L. Finch for “services rendered as Inspector on Union Square flagging.” Signed at the bottom in black ink by Tweed. In fine condition, with small tear to top edge, several other signatures and notations and a bit of light toning to folds. R&R COA.
