Chilling letter from John Henry Winder, responsible for the horrid conditons at Andersonville prison: “Said Myers was confirmed in the Eastern Station in this City for some time and no one coming to claim him...delivered him to Capt. Rogers with the understanding that he should be returned when claimed. Will you please have him delivered to the bearer and oblige.”

Confederate General who a a commander of Confederate prisons east of the Mississippi which included Andersonville and Libby Prisons. Captain Henry Wirz, the commanding officer at Andersonville prison was the only Confederate military officer tried, convicted and hanged after the Civil War. Winder, Wirz’s superior at Andersonville and who had more responsibility for conditions within the prison than Wirz, died of a heart attack before the war ended and escaped Wirz’s fate. ALS signed “J.H. Winder,” one page, 8 x 10, Richmond, Va letterhead, December 26, 1862. In part: “General, there is a man named Frank Myers with Capt. Rogers Cavalry of your Command, who is claimed by Maj. J.W. Atkinson Comd’g 19th Bat. VVa. Heavy Artillery, a a deserter from his command. Said Myers was confirmed in the Eastern Station in this City for some time and no one coming to claim him, The Provost Marshall delivered him to Capt. Rogers with the understanding that he should be returned when claimed. Will you please have him delivered to the bearer and oblige.” In fine condition, with minor edge toning, a horizontal mailing fold through the signature, a few minor creases. R&R COA.
