War-dated ALS from Porter in which he advises the commanding officer of troops who have secured a town: “You have control of the town and all searching is to be done by your officers, not by outsiders.”

Union major general who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope too attack but was exonerated in 1878. ALS signed “F.J. Porter,” one page, 5 x 8, July 19, 1861. War-dated ALS from Porter, by order of General Patterson, to the commanding officer of troops that have secure a town, advising him that all searching is to be done officers and not by outsiders and that Generals Sanford, Cadwalader and Kein (?) are directed to “leave all to you.” In part: “You have control of the town and all searching is to be done by your officers, not by outsiders…A guard is ordered to report to you from each division and to be under your…only” In very good condition, with expected toning to edges, typical letter folds and adhesive residue to the reverse from a previous mounting.
