The Hollywood Victory Committee was an organization founded on December 10, 1941 during World War II to provide a means so that television and radio performers that were not in military service could contribute to the war effort through bond drives and improving morale for troops. It was associated with the Screen Actors Guild. The Committee organized events between January 1942 until August 1945. Chairmen of the committee included Clark Gable, James Cagney, and George Murphy. TLS signed by 52 members of the committee, three pages, 8.25 x 10.5, Hollywood Victory Committee, Inc. for stage, screen and radio letterhead, May 1, 1942. Letter of thanks to a gentleman in New York City, who sent his compliments after a recent performance. In part, “In your letter you were kind enough to say that we had sacrificed both time and effort, There has been no sacrifice on our part. We know that what we are doing is our duty and obligation. Because of the nature of the expedition we are fully aware of the difficulties involved. We expect to be pushed around and we will be disappointed a little if we aren’t…We are deeply appreciative of the opportunity and our only regret is that we are not playing more cities and town. We are proud to be permitted to contribute to this truly noble cause for we are all cognizant of the great sacrificial effort the men in the armed forces are making for all of us, to bring us victory --- the victory which we must have --- we will have.” Signed at the conclusion and on the following two pages by 52 members of the committee, including: Bert Lahr, Cary Grant, Groucho Marx, Jim Cagney, Stan Laurel, Desi Arnaz, Alice Brady, Merle Oberon, Frank McHugh, Joan Blondell, Joan Bennett, Charles Boyer, Marie McDonald, Francis Langford and Pat O’Brien. All three pages are affixed to poster board, for an overall size of 8.25 x 24.5. In very good condition, with overall toning and soiling, old repaired tear to bottom corner of last page, affecting several signatures and a few signatures light but legible. R&R COA.
