In November 1941 Jeckeln was appointed SS- and Police Chief for Northern Russia. In this capacity he was responsible for the mass murder of thousands of Soviet Jews. After the war Jeckeln was handed over to the Soviet authorities and sentenced to death. He was executed in Riga, Latvia, in 1946.
