The first Chief Justice promises to repay £30

First chief justice of the Supreme Court. In 1795 he negotiated “Jay’s Treaty” with England, in which America agreed to pay its pre-war debts in return for Britain leaving the Northwest. DS, one page, 6.25 x 2.5, December 16, 1768. A promissory note made out in Jay’s hand to Benjamin Repam. In full: “I promise to pay Benjm. Repam Esqr. or order on demand thirty pounds for value received in York 16 Decm. 1768. John Jay.” Also signed by B. Kissam indicating that he “received £4.17.6 in part of interest on this note.” In fine condition, with scattered soiling and toning and edge chipping slightly affecting the text. R&R COA.
