Sheridan, en route to Texas with General Belknap, mentions Sherman and Grant

Union general whose cavalry command finally blocked Lee’s escape at Appomattox. ALS signed “P.H. Sheridan,” four pages both sides, 4.5 x 6.75 folded, March 13, 1873. Written to “My dear Genl. Smith (probably John Eugene Smith),” explaining that, in part, “I am afraid the movement of your Regiment to the Salt Lake valley cannot take place this spring.” Mentions General Sherman and President Grant, ending, “I expect to leave here for Texas with Genl. Belknap on the 1st of April. There is nothing new in Army affairs.” In very good condition, overall wear and multiple mailing folds, and with a tear to the top of the center fold. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved book page portrait. R&R COA.
