Description

Buffalo Soldier muster roll

After the Civil War, the US Army recruited four regiments of black soldiers to serve in the West. The men of the 24th and 25th Infantry and the 9th and 10th Cavalry fought Indians, built forts, pursued desperadoes, and protected railroad workers. Because their curly hair resembled that animal’s shaggy coat, the Indians called them “Buffalo Soldiers.” DS, one page both sides, 32 x 20, December 31, 1874. Muster roll for Company C of the Ninth Cavalry, signed by fifty members of the company, most of whom have ‘made their mark’ besides their written name. Details about the soldiers include place and date of enlistment, clothing and tobacco issued and pay received. In fine condition, with light even shade of toning and a few small separations along folds. R&R COA.
