McClellan writes to an associate concerning a recommendation, “But with the information already in my possession about an English Duke I hardly think it will be necessary to bother Mr. Taber on the subject.”

Union general who was removed from command by Lincoln for failure to continue pressure on Lee’s army during the Peninsula Campaign. ALS signed “Geo. B. McClellan,” two pages, 5.25 x 8.5, Steven’s Battery Office letterhead, May 21, 1870. Letter to a Mr. George Curtis. In full, “I have just received your note of the 20th. Your explanation of your cause in recommending Mr. Taber was quite unnecessary for the reason that Waslow had already told me about it - I refer only to it now to thank you for your kind feeling towards me in the matter. I will drop in upon you in your office within a day or two. I feel I shall hardly be able to do so today - But with the information already in my possession about an English Duke I hardly think it will be necessary to bother Mr. Taber on the subject.” In fine condition.
