Description

A couple’s vacation diary from a California excursion, including a night club table tent signed by Howard Hughes, with an account of their meeting

Pencil signature, “Howard Hughes,” on an off-white 5 x 4.25 table tent from the Mocambo night club in California. Signature was obtained on November 19, 1946 by Mr. And Mrs. George Proctor, who were vacationing in California at the time. Accompanying the signature is their leather bound diary of the trip, containing almost daily entries during their trip, including their entry for November 19, which mentions meeting Hughes at the club, “Tonight we went to the Brown Derby and had a good dinner and saw a lot of stars. Esther Williams mainly. Next went to Mocambo’s and danced a little. This is a beautiful place with little birds flying around. Saw Howard Hughes and Louis B. Mayer.” Diary also contains several signatures inside as well as loose signatures from William Holden, Cecil B. deMille, Harold Lloyd, Jackie Cooper, Sterling Hayden, Sonny Tufts, William Bendix, Jack Carson, Martha Raye, Esther Williams and Fibber and Molly McGee. Also accompanying the diary is a letter from the Vice president of Paramount Studios, dated October 28, 1946, mentioning that he is looking forward to a visit from the Proctors and promises his friend, “I will arrange for them to spend an enjoyable couple of hours at the studio.” Also included is a small color map highlighting their trip from Kentucky to California. In fine condition, with a shade of toning to tent and light wear to diary. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
