“This is to certify that the bearer Mr. William Ryan...also one of the collectors of Internal Revenue...being appointed by President Cleveland”

Major General 1st Virginia Cavalry who fought at Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania, Governor of Virginia, and Robert E. Lee’s nephew. ALS signed “Fitzhugh Lee, Consul General,” one page, 5 x 8, Consulate General of the United States letterhead, June 18, 1896. Letter issued for his friend William Ryan. In part, “This is to certify that the bearer Mr. William Ryan - a personal friend of mine is a citizen of Richmond, Virginia…also one of the collectors of Internal Revenue…being appointed by President Cleveland. He has been on a social visit to Havana and is about to return home.” In fine condition, with pencil notation to top and expected folds. R&R COA.
