Document reads, “By His Excellency George Washington, Esq., General and Commander in Chief of the Forces of the United States of America. These are to certify that the Bearer hereof John Shayne Matross, in the 2nd N York Artillery Regiment, having faithfully served the United States from the 9th August 1787 til the present period and being enlisted for the War only, is hereby discharged from the American Army.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Washington and countersigned by J[ohn] Trumbell, Jr. Double cloth matted and framed with a seated portrait of Washington, to an overall size of 25 x 21. In very good condition, with large Washington signature a bit light but legible, with a somewhat fuzzy washed out appearance, light toning to document, a bit heavier at top, one document fold through first initial of Washington’s signature and document having been apparently professionally repaired along folds on reverse.
