Confederate general who was cut off from Richmond when the Mississippi River was captured by Union forces in 1863. Isolated in what was virtually a separate country he was forced to deal with issues such as impressment of supplies, destruction of cotton to prevent capture, and blockade running through Mexico in addition to his regular military duties. For the next two years he held his own in an amazing display of courage and intelligence but on May 26, 1865, he surrendered to the Union. At that time he was the only significant Confederate force left. Fountain pen signature, “E. Kirby Smith, Nashville, Tenn,” on an off-white 3.5 x 2.25 card, affixed to a slightly larger card, dated March 10, 1871. In fine condition. R&R COA.
