Scalloped-top vellum DS signed by Jefferson as president, “Th: Jefferson,” and Madison as Secretary of State, one page, 10.25 x 15, April 11, 1805. Ship’s pass issued to “the Brig Eliza of Boston, Samuel Hatch Master and Commander of the Burthen One Hundred seventy five tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with thirteen men to pass with her Company Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hinderence, seizure or molestation.” Several notes are on the reverse including one reading “At sea, 12 Dec. 1807. Warned by HMS Cambria not to proceed to France but to some port in England, in default of which the said vessel is detainable by any of his Majesty’s cruizers [sic] according to the late Proclamation.” In good condition, with Madison’s signature light but legible, heavy creasing to all four edges, worn but intact seal and some scattered toning and soiling. Jefferson’s signature is notably very bold! COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
